Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
